Interprofessional education in undergraduate healthcare programmes: the reaction of student dietitians

Abstract: This is one of very few evaluations to describe the reaction of student dietitians to IPE. Student dietitians had largely positive reactions to the IPE course. Further research is required to evaluate whether these positive reactions were a direct consequence of the inclusion of students from other health professions and whether these translate into positive effects on learning, behaviour and results. The opportunities for the dietetic profession posed by students' involvement in IPE are discussed.

“…There were multiple studies conducted in Australia [8,36,37], Canada [13,38,39], and the United States of America (USA) [10,35,40]. Most included studies (n=8/11, 72.7%) evaluated intradisciplinary learning outcomes for students enrolled in physiotherapy [8,[36][37][38], occupational therapy [13,35,40] and dietetics [41] programs. However, it is important to note that three Australian studies sampled the same group of physiotherapy students [8,36,37] and the publications are based on the same educational program.…”

“…The pedagogical approach used by educators was varied, comprising learning approaches across transformative learning [8,13,36,37], constructivist [37,42], arts-based [13], inter-professional learning [41,42], problem-based learning [38,39] and experiential learning [40] approaches. The remaining studies in this review did not specify a particular approach [10,35].…”

“…Role play with students playing the patient for their peers is thought to be as positive a learning experience as the use of simulated patients and is more costeffective (48) . Teaching communication skills as part of an inter-professional workshop has been well received by students (50) . Whatever methods are used prequalification training needs to give students opportunities to recognise the skills base needed, to develop the skills, to have that skill tested and to have individualised feedback to allow opportunities for improvement (49) .…”
