Interpreting the Impact of Perceived Privacy and Security Concerns in Patients' Use of Online Health Information Systems

Abstract: In this paper the authors examine the various models in the medical domain and the communities that proliferate around these web models. Given that several of these business models have failed. while others continue to exist, it is argued that the key is to understand the individual consumer motivators and inhibitors for such knowledge. In this paper the authors systematically develop a theoretical model to understand such motivators and inhibitors of individuals' obtaining health related information online. T… Show more

“…Similarly, Belanger and Crossler (2011) stated privacy concerns as the desire of individuals to control or have some influence over data about themselves. Different types (e.g., medical, financial, & consumer) and levels (e.g., individual, group or organizational) of the information privacy have been documented to show its impact on individuals' perceptions and behavioral intentions (Ambrose et al 2012;see Smith et al 2011 for a review). For example, medical and financial lnforrnatlon is considered more sensitive by consumers than the information about their life characteristics and shopping preferences (Nowak et al 1992;Sheehan et al 20(0).…”

“…Prior work on health infomediaries includes establishing definitions for health infomediaries and their attributes (Vega, DeHart, & Montague, 2011); qualitatively exploring inhibitors and motivators (Ambrose & Basu, 2012); classification of user categories (Yim et al, 2015); and trust, privacy, and information use issues with infomediaries (Lim & Kim, 2012). Existing studies allude to the need for knowledge sharing and the role of user empowerment in this process (Khuntia et al, 2017;Marabelli, Newell, Krantz, & Swan, 2014).…”

“…Ambrose and Basu [2] express that cyber-attacks are the most frequent causes of medical data breaches. Medical institutions collect and preserve patient data on their systems in databases such as those on their websites, electronic medical recording (EMR) systems, order communication systems (OCS), and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS); thus, data security is closely linked to cybersecurity [3]- [7].…”
