Faced with the challenges presented by climate change, many interfaces presenting feedback on available, consumed or saved energy resources have been proposed to support a change of behavior towards a more environmental one in the field of sustainable HCI. If, for this purpose, bio-inspired systems have been proposed, few of them are presented in a tangible way or as histograms. This, despite encouraging results, as much in terms of awareness of energy consumption as in terms of emotional connection developed with the system, of artistic interfaces aiming at the commitment in an environmental behavior. With the aim of designing a system to support users in a shared practice of shifting energy demand, we present the results of the first steps of our approach. This paper focuses on design choice validation at an early stage of the design and development cycle, before spending time and money on physical prototyping; studying behavior change remains outside the scope of this work. Thus, the results presented concern the effectiveness and UX of static and animated mock-ups of eco-prediction and eco-feedback interfaces in the form of bio-inspired histograms. The results indicate that the efficacy of a bio-inspired histogram compared to a conventional histogram is lower. The second study shows that part of this loss of efficacy can be resolved by contextualizing the data. Also, without being significative, the leaf plant metaphor is found to be more effective and aesthetic than a metaphor closer to a classical histogram inspired by bamboo. We conclude that the leaf plant metaphor can be used for an eco-forecast and eco-feedback interface in the form of a histogram to shift the energy demand of battery-capable devices.CCS Concepts: • Human-centered computing → Empirical studies in HCI; Field studies; • Social and professional topics → Sustainability.

When people browse online news, small thumbnail images accompanying links to articles attract their attention and help them to decide which articles to read. As an increasing proportion of online news can be construed as data journalism, we have witnessed a corresponding increase in the incorporation of visualization in article thumbnails. However, there is little research to support alternative design choices for visualization thumbnails, which include resizing, cropping, simplifying, and embellishing charts appearing within the body of the associated article. We therefore sought to better understand these design choices and determine what makes a visualization thumbnail inviting and interpretable. This paper presents our findings from a survey of visualization thumbnails collected online and from conversations with data journalists and news graphics designers. Our study reveals that there exists an uncharted design space, one that is in need of further empirical study. Our work can thus be seen as a first step toward providing structured guidance on how to design thumbnails for data stories.

Embellishments are features commonly used in everyday visualisations which are demonstrated to enhance assimilation and memorability. Despite their popularity, little is known about their impact on enticing readers to explore visualisations. To address this gap, we conducted 18 interviews with a diverse group of participants who were consumers of news media but non-experts in visualisation and design. Participants were shown ten embellished and plain visualisations collected from the news and asked to rank them based on enticement and ease of understanding. Extending prior work, our interview results suggest that visualisations with multiple embellishment types might make a visualisation perceived as more enticing. An important finding from our study is that the widespread of certain embellishments in the media might have made them part of visualisation conventions, making a visualisation appear more objective but less enticing. Based on these findings, we ran a follow-up online user study showing participants variations of the visualisations with multiple embellishments to isolate each embellishment type and investigate its effect. We found that variations with salient embellishments were perceived as more enticing. We argue that to unpack the concept of embellishments; we must consider two factors: embellishment saliency and editorial styles. Our study contributes concept and design considerations to the literature concerned with visualisation design for non-experts in visualisation and design.
