Interpreting Deposition Behavior of Polydisperse Surface-Modified Nanoparticles Using QCM-D and Sand-Packed Columns

Abstract: The rising use of surface-modified engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) will result in their increased presence in aquatic environments; hence, a better understanding of their environmental fate is needed. In this study, silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs) capped with organic acids of varying alkyl-chain length were used as model functionalized ENPs. Particle deposition kinetics were evaluated using sand-packed columns and a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). In general, an increase in solut… Show more

“…where C is the sensitivity constant (17.7 ng cm −2 Hz −1 for a 5 MHz quartz crystal), n is the overtone number (1, 3, 5, 7, or 9), and ∆f is the shift in resonance frequency at the specified overtone n [80,81]. The third overtone (n = 3) was used in all experiments.…”

“…Properties of nanoparticles changes when they are functionalized, so they need to be evaluated [37]. Physical characteristics of the nanoparticles are important to estimate the efficiency of a nanoparticle.…”

“…To obtain the desired particle concentration, samples were diluted in PBS (1:100×). For each condition, five videos of one-minute length were recorded for each sample and analyzed using the NanoSight NTA 3.1 software [ 30 ]. Sterile and filtered PBS solutions were used as blanks for particle calculations in every measurement, and after each measurement the flushing lines were thoroughly washed to avoid contamination.…”
