Interpretations of the Term “Watershed Line” Used as Reference for Volar Plating

Abstract: Objective The objective of this systematic review is to provide an overview of all interpretations of the definition of the watershed line used in literature. Methods The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed for this review. A comprehensive search was performed for definitions of the watershed line given in literature. A total of 32 studies giving an explicit interpretation of the definition of the watershed line or anatomical referenc… Show more

“…The watershed line concept was proposed by Orbay in 2005, and was defined as “the transverse ridge that limits the concave surface of the volar radius”, and was further refined by Nelson and Orbay, as” the theoretical line marking the most volar aspect of the volar margin of the radius” [ 24 , 25 ] Thus, there is no generally accepted definition of the watershed line, however, other interpretations include: “The distal radial physeal scar”, “The distal border of the pronator quadratus muscle” and “The origin of the volar carpal ligaments” [ 26 ].…”

“…The watershed line is a term that is still being defined and debated in the literature. 13,14 The term has a geographical origin and relates to the topographic ridge, which spans between mountains, dividing the area into two rainfall catchment areas. The analog is that the dry bone radius is lying on the table, and the rain proximal to the ridge drains into the pronator fossa and the rain distal to the ridge drains toward the wrist joint (►Fig.…”
