This study examined the identity work processes of severely disabled soldiers who faced discontinuous and involuntary career transitions. As these individuals engaged in rehabilitation and vocational training at a military-affiliated facility, their identity transitions were not marked by deletions of past identity elements or reference groups. Instead, their transitions involved collectively and contextually edited imaginations of the future that allowed for continuity of their foundational self-narratives. The findings extend past research by identifying why the forging of continuity is generative during certain identity transitions. The findings also show that when similar others contribute to the script of one’s identity narrative within a familiar liminal context, maintaining a semblance of the status quo is construed as change.

Governments are large buyers of vehicles, thus contributing to pollution. To promote sustainability, policies have been shaped to replace government-owned fossil fuel cars with electric cars. Public procurement is seen as a strategic tool for the government to transition. This study identifies a research gap due to a lack of studies on how stakeholders at different levels identify and calculate the sustainability effects of public procurement of cars. Our approach uses a multilevel perspective to explore how various stakeholders perceive and assess the effects of sustainable public procurement. The data were obtained through a qualitative research design with documents and semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in Norway ranging from government agencies, public procurement officers, car suppliers, and end-users. (End-users in this setting are the ones who ultimately use the vehicles). The study’s findings are two-fold. First, it contributes to understanding that perceived effects of sustainable public procurement vary from the stakeholders' perspectives and that public procurement initiatives perceive to have cultural effects in addition to innovation, environmental, economic, and social impacts. Second, it contributes to understanding the importance of feedback mechanisms in public procurement to align the assessment of the effects. A better understanding of how effects are identified, and improved feedback mechanisms could help government representatives control the procurement system and accomplish the intended effects.

National Identity, Othering and Resistance: Host Country Manager’s Experience at a Japanese Multinational Enterprise in India

National identity has been found to be a basis for othering and resistance in host country managers at multinational enterprises overseas’ affiliates. An original model of employee’s resistance using national identity has developed a nuanced understanding of how resistance manifests. This research tests this original model in a multinational enterprise’s office in the emerging market and power distance accepting India. A case study design was adopted. Interpretive analysis of the data indicates that the newly developed model could apply to Indian situations, and collateral inductive reasoning proposes a further refinement to this model. Thus, besides verbal othering, it is found that the use of space and rituals can also be used in the acts of resistance and further it is proposed that such acts are not necessarily continuous, but can manifest intermittently. Hence, the practising international human resources manager now has a broader lens to assess resistance manifestation, facilitating sooner remedial countermeasures. The cross-cultural study is among the pioneers in studying national identity as a means of resistance in a power distance accepting context in general, and the under-researched advanced economy, emerging market Japan–India international business dyad specifically. It contributes to cross-cultural management (CCM) literature by surfacing the darker side of globalization—the power retained by the parent company and concomitant subordination of the host country manager that results in resistance. This study adds to the under-researched India–Japan global business scholarship.
