Interpretable Faraday complexity classification

Abstract: Faraday complexity describes whether a spectropolarimetric observation has simple or complex magnetic structure. Quickly determining the Faraday complexity of a spectropolarimetric observation is important for processing large, polarised radio surveys. Finding simple sources lets us build rotation measure grids, and finding complex sources lets us follow these sources up with slower analysis techniques or further observations. We introduce five features that can be used to train simple, interpretable machine l… Show more

“…It has spawned multiple efforts to deconvolve the direct or "'dirty" Faraday spectrum, to remove the sidelobes arising from the ★ E-mail: larry@umn.edu (LR) incomplete 𝜆 2 coverage (e.g., Heald 2009;Frick et al 2011;Andrecut et al 2012;Ndiritu et al 2021). Also, there is a strong interest in detecting "complexity" in Faraday spectra, i.e., the presence of more than one Faraday component (Brown et al 2019;Alger et al 2021;Cooray et al 2021;Pratley et al 2021). A parallel set of efforts have used parametric methods, e.g.…”

“…Since Faraday complexity will manifest as any combination of broadened and multiple peaks in the Faraday spectrum, it is difficult to ascribe a single value of f to a Faraday complex component, making these components less ideal for use in an RM grid. See Alger et al (2021) and Thomson et al (2023) for a more detailed description of Faraday complexity. Examples of Faraday complex Faraday spectra are provided in Appendix A in Figures 18(d), (e), (f), and (g).…”
