In the present study, we compared the internal and external anatomy of pearl oyster (Pinctada imbricata Röding, 1798) from some South American localities, including Venezuela and several regions of Brazil. The anatomical data shows non-geographical variations characterized by variable outline in adults, different degrees of posterior auricle shell development and mantle papillae ranging from normal to digitiform. The geographical variations can be divided into two major groups: the Venezuelan group presents a more folded mantle; pallial muscle grouped in anterior and median-posterior sets; poorly-developed perpendicular mantle groove; inner lamella not extended into the anterior mantle. Brazilian group specimens present a smoother mantle, with less clear separation between anterior and posterior mantle muscle groups; externally-developed perpendicular groove; inner lamella extension developed in anterior mantle. These differences may represent ecophenotypes or differences among isolated South American populations, which may be elucidated by subsequent phylogeographic studies.Keywords: Bivalvia; Pteriomorphia; pearl oyster; anatomy; intraspecific variation DIFERENÇAS ANATÔMICAS ENTRE ESPÉCIMES DE Pinctada imbricata RÖDING, 1798 DE DIFERENTES LOCALIDADES DA AMÉRICA DO SUL RESUMONo presente estudo comparou-se a anatomia da ostra perlífera (Pinctada imbricata Röding, 1798) de algumas localidades da América do Sul, incluindo a Venezuela e várias regiões do Brasil. Foram encontradas variações não geográficas e geográficas. As variações não geográficas foram caracterizadas por adultos com contorno bem variável, diferentes graus de desenvolvimento da aurícula posterior e papilas da lamela interna do manto variando de normal a digitiformes. Variações geográficas podem ser divididas em dois grandes grupos: o grupo venezuelano apresentou um manto mais pregueado; musculatura palial agrupada em dois conjuntos de feixes -um anterior e outro mediano-posterior; sulco perpendicular do manto pouco desenvolvido. Espécimes dos grupos brasileiros apresentaram um manto menos pregueado, com separação menos nítida entre os feixes musculares paliais anterior e posterior do manto; sulco perpendicular do manto bem desenvolvido; lamela interna do manto se estendendo externamente na região do manto anterior. Essas diferenças podem ser ecofenótipos ou diferenças entre as populações com certo grau de isolamento da América do Sul, que podem ser elucidados por estudos filogeográficos subsequentes.

The evaluation of macroscopic and microscopic textures of sand grains using elliptic Fourier and principal component analysis: Implications for the discrimination of sedimentary environments

A method that integrates elliptic Fourier and principal component analysis is a new development in the analysis of the shapes of sand grains. However, conventional elliptic Fourier and principal component analysis based on the variance-covariance matrix of the elliptic Fourier results can determine only the form of sand grains, and fails to quantify fine-scale boundary smoothness of grains. In this study, sand grains from glacial, fluvial, foreshore and aeolian environments were analysed using both elliptic Fourier and principal component analysis and an extension of elliptic Fourier and principal component analysis based on the correlation matrix to extract information on grain form (macroscopic) and grain boundary smoothness (microscopic) separately. Conventional elliptic Fourier and principal component analysis based on the variance-covariance matrix produces macroscopic particle shape descriptors, such as the elongation index and bump indices. These indices indicate that sand grains exposed to subaqueous transportation (fluvial and foreshore) have forms that are more elongated than those exposed to subaerial transportation (aeolian dunes). However, elliptic Fourier and principal component analysis based on the correlation matrix is, in addition, able to extract microscopic particle features, which can be interpreted in terms of a boundary smoothness index. The boundary smoothness index indicates that the surfaces of glacial grains are the most rugged, whereas the surfaces of aeolian grains are the smoothest. On bivariate plots of the boundary smoothness and elongation indices, samples from fluvial, foreshore, aeolian and glacial environments cluster in discrete regions. In addition, the analysis reveals that glacial grains are exposed to different morphological maturation pathways than those from fluvial, foreshore and aeolian environments.

The pearl oyster, Pinctada radiata, shows great variation in shell morphology throughout its distribution. This variation can be related to phenotypic plasticity, genetic variability or a combination of both. Using geometric morphometric and microsatellite DNA analyses, two morphologically distinct populations of the pearl oyster were studied in the northern Persian Gulf, i.e. from the Lavan and Hendourabi Islands. Ten landmarks were selected to define the shape of the left shell. In addition, concentration of Zn, Mg, Fe, Cu, Pb, Cd, Mn and Cr of the soft tissues were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry. Six microsatellite loci were used to assess the population genetic structure of the pearl oyster. There were morphometric differences between the populations suggesting the existence of two morphotypes. There was a significant difference between the two populations in concentrations of Fe, Mg, Zn, Cd, Mn and Cr indicating that the specimens from the Lavan Island experience a more stressful environment than those from the Hendourabi Island. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that the proportion of the genetic variation attributed to differences among populations of the pearl oyster was highly significant for both F ST and R ST (F ST ¼ 0.066, R ST ¼ 0.265, P , 0.001). Our findings showed that stressful conditions resulting from heavy metals may have a direct influence on the separation of the populations in Lavan and Hendourabi despite the lack of a physical barrier.
