Interplay of thermochemistry and structural chemistry, the journal (volume 15, 2004) and the discipline

Abstract: As practiced disciplines, structural chemistry, and thermochemistry need not necessarily be related. Yet such relationships, ranging from minor to very close, can help our overall understanding and detailed analyses of the species and methods under consideration. In the current study, these relations are made more evident from among the contents of the journal "Structural Chemistry" (Vol. 15) for the year 2004. The year's articles have been reviewed, giving to most of those appearing therein a thermochemical c… Show more

“…2D-NMR was used to determine the structures of the amino acid derivatives. The enthalpy of formation of a trishomocubane derivative, pentacyclo [5.4.0.0 2,6 .0 3,10 .0 5,9 ]undecan-8,11-dione, has been reported [57,58] but this species corresponds to ''merely'' an isomer of the species in the current study.…”

“…The current study belongs to our series of earlier reviews of the contents of the journal Structural Chemistry for calendar years 2000 through 2004 [1][2][3][4][5], 2006 through 2008 [6][7][8] we give to the ''chemical'' content of this journal (volume 16,2005) a thermochemical flavor-the energies of chemical species and systems of formation, reactions, and of phase transition are discussed. Questions or suggestions for further research are not uncommonly given.…”

“…The next paper by Yang et al [111] reports the synthesis and crystal structure of a new layered complex [Ni(L)(T-PHA)]Á8H 2 O (L = 1,3,6,9,11,14-hexaazatricyclo[12.2.1.1 (6,9)] octadecane; TPHA = terephthalate dianion) which contains a 2-D network of eight-member water clusters which are strongly connected by O-HÁÁÁO hydrogen bonds. As part of a study of the energetics of hydrates [112], the energetics of water clusters of the general formula (H 2 O) n were recently compared to cycloalkanes with the general formula (CH 2 ) n .…”

“…The current paper as such logically belongs to the series of earlier reviews of Structural Chemistry for calendar years 2000 through 2004 [3][4][5][6][7], 2006 and 2007 [8,9]. The review for 2005 is currently being prepared.…”

“…This relationship has been extensively studied by Joel L. Liebman and his associates, first in his series of book chapters in Advances in Molecular Structure Research [64], then, from 2003 in a series of review articles in Structural Chemistry. In these papers Liebman and associates have reviewed the journal volumes one by one and examined most articles in an explicitly thermochemical perspective [65][66][67][68][69]. Depending on the topic of the paper reviewed, the author(s) discussed thermochemical properties like enthalpy of combustion, enthalpy of formation, enthalpy of reaction, heat, phase change enthalpies, and molecular energetics, using reference data from thermochemical archives.…”
