Interplay of Configurational and Structural Transitions in the Course of Intercalation

Abstract: On the basis of a combination of the lattice gas and the linear elasticity theories, we argue that the major features of the intercalation isotherms can be well understood in terms of a coupling between the configurational and the structural transitions. Competitive effects of the internal and loading stresses are discussed. A simple model, operating with the hydrostatic parts of the stress and strain fields, is shown to be applicable to a quantitative description of experimental data on electrochemical interc… Show more

“…In previous reports, 21,22 it has already been considered that volume changes upon intercalation have an influence on the cell voltage. In this model, it is assumed that there is an additional term to the host-guest free energy resulting from the elastic interaction 21 (Table 1) and eq 10 (blue dots).…”

“…This would allow us to analyze their impacts to the observed behavior. With this purpose we combine the distortive lattice gas model that has been successfully applied 17 to a description of volume dilatation in ordered intercalation compounds with the maximum information entropy approach. 18 The latter is an inductive inference method which is quite efficient 9 in estimating the host disorder from the experimental isotherm data.…”
