Interplay between Atomic and Mesoscopic Order on Gold Vicinal Surfaces

Abstract: Self-organization on Au(1,1,1) vicinal surfaces provides a unique opportunity to study the interplay between atomic and mesoscopic order. First, experimental results demonstrate the different interactions between steps and surface reconstruction on Au(1,1,1) vicinal surfaces. Depending on the step atomic structure, lines of discommensurations are found to be either parallel or perpendicular to the step edges. This leads to a complete understanding of the mesoscopic self-organization on theses surfaces, which d… Show more

“…In Au͑322͒ terraces are 1ϫ1, ͑111͒ planes, whereas Au͑788͒ terraces display a characteristic reconstruction that is similar to the reconstruction of Au͑111͒. 9,10 This is better observed in the closer view shown in the inset of Fig. 1͑b͒ where the corrugation due to the terrace levels has been subtracted.…”

“…In situ surface preparation is done by extensive sputtering-annealing cycles. Most of Au͑111͒ vicinals undergo facetting, 9 but Au͑322͒ and Au͑788͒ are stable orientations. Figure 1 shows the respective scanning tunneling microscopy ͑STM͒ images.…”

“…One may invoke also the presence of the surface reconstruction stabilizing straight steps as observed on Si(111) [8]. For most of the Au(111) vicinals this reconstruction leads to a hill-and-valley, faceted structure [9], but Au(788) is a stable orientation. The LEED pattern of the specular spot taken at E 20 eV shown in Fig.…”

“…The inset shows the detailed structure at a smaller scale. Bright and dark areas indicate the presence of alternating fccand hcp-packed layers within the same terrace [9]. (c) The LEED pattern contains both superstructures perpendicular and parallel to the terraces.…”

“…1(c). It has been reported earlier for Au(111) that the discommensurate lines become parallel to the step edges with {100} microfacets [13][14][15]. This indicates that the step edges of the Cr islands that are parallel to the discommensurate lines comprise of {100} microfacets.…”
