Interplay Among Psychopathologic Variables, Personal Resources, Context-Related Factors, and Real-life Functioning in Individuals With Schizophrenia

Abstract: The high centrality of functional capacity and everyday life skills in the network suggests that improving the ability to perform tasks relevant to everyday life is critical for any therapeutic intervention in schizophrenia. The pattern of network node connections supports the implementation of personalized interventions.

“…For instance, the Italian Network for Research on Psychoses (Rocca et al, 2016) identified clusters of patients according to their social cognition performances, the cluster consisting of the most impaired being the individuals with the worst symptomatic pattern in neurocognition, disorganization, and positive symptoms. The same group (Galderisi et al, 2018) lately confirmed via a network analysis that social cognition is nearer to the core of schizophrenia, than positive, negative, and disorganization symptoms are. Therefore, they suggested that improving everyday life skills and functional capacity, which strictly correlates with social cognition, is crucial for therapeutic interventions in schizophrenia.…”

“…A recent work from the Italian Network for Research on Psychoses (Galderisi et al, ), which is an example of what insight with potential treatment implications network analysis can provide into the complex relationships among symptoms, showed how functional capacity and everyday life skills play a central role in the network of symptoms and suggested that, alongside with pharmacologic treatment, “the ability to perform tasks relevant to everyday life is critical for any therapeutic intervention in schizophrenia.” Hence, identifying central nodes can help in identifying core domains to focus treatment on (Fried et al, ; Galderisi et al, ).…”
