Interpersonal Personality Measures Show Circumplex Structure Based on New Psychometric Criteria

Abstract: The importance of the interpersonal circle in organizing the interpersonal domain is complemented by its empirical relations with broader personality taxonomies and with more specific personality variables. Yet circumplex structure in interpersonal measures has often been investigated using the "eyeball test" rather than using circumplex criteria of known effectiveness. Simulations (Acton, 1999) showed the effectiveness of 5 exploratory criteria (3 entirely new) that assess the properties of equal spacing, con… Show more

“…Our results are twofold: [1] we compared the patterns of interpersonal behavior displayed in male dyads where one participant has Asperger's syndrome (AS) to those displayed in male dyads with two neurotypical (NT) participants and [2] examined the experiential consequences of these patterns for the participants in the two different types of dyads (AS dyads, NT dyads). Next, we will discuss these two types of results in two separate sections.…”

“…The circumplex structure implies that those variables that fall close together are more related than those that fall further apart on the circle, with opposite variables being negatively related and orthogonal variables unrelated. The circumplex structure can also be seen to suggest that all variables are equally spaced around the circle [98], while sophisticated psychometric tests can be applied to determine whether the interpersonal variables really meet the criteria for exact circumplex structure [1]. “…These dimensions are the first two factors that were detected when the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems was initially developed; furthermore it is argued in interpersonal theory that the full range of interpersonal behaviors can be operationalized by these two dimensions (Horowitz et al, 1997). Whereas the different subscales or segments of interpersonal circumplex models may vary in number as well as in specific labels they use, all these models display a two-dimensional array organized around the axes of dominance and affiliation (Acton and Revell, 2002;Horowitz et al, 1988). Given these aspects we choose to use scores for these two dimensions in stead of using the subscale scores.…”

“…Personality traits, interpersonal styles, and behavioral signatures can then be correlated with these lifespace areas and to the person's life story more generally (Acton & Revelle, 2002;Bauer & McAdams, 2004).…”
