Interpersonal brain synchronization in the right temporo-parietal junction during face-to-face economic exchange

Abstract: In daily life, interpersonal interactions are influenced by uncertainty about other people's intentions. Face-to-face (FF) interaction reduces such uncertainty by providing external visible cues such as facial expression or body gestures and facilitates shared intentionality to promote belief of cooperative decisions and actual cooperative behaviors in interaction. However, so far little is known about interpersonal brain synchronization between two people engaged in naturally occurring FF interactions. In thi… Show more

“…Cross-brain coherence using wavelet analysis and related correlation techniques have been applied in neuroimaging studies to confirm synchronous neural activation between two individuals and to analyze cross-brain synchrony during either live interpersonal interactions or delayed story-telling and listening paradigms (Cui et al, 2012; Jiang et al, 2012; Scholkmann et al, 2013; Tang et al, 2016; Kawasaki et al, 2013; Hasson et al, 2004; Dumas et al, 2010), Liu, et al, 2017). Wavelet analysis decomposes a time varying signal into frequency components.…”

“…Wavelet coherence measures the correlation between two signals’ component on both frequency and time, and has been successfully applied in several fNIRS hyperscanning studies 32, 36, 37, 58, 89 . FNIRS Oxy-Hb time series from the banker betting stage to judging stage (i.e.…”

“…It plays a key role in social communication (O’Donnell et al, 2015; Tang et al, 2016), even in the implicit condition (Zerubavel et al, 2015; Welborn et al, 2016). In the conditions without face-to face communication, activity at TPJ was highly increased when participant engaged in more consideration to other’s perspective (Falk et al, 2013).…”
