Interpenetrating polymer networks of poly(methacrylic acid) and polyacrylamide: synthesis, characterization and potential application for sustained drug delivery

Abstract: Novel interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) and polyacrylamide (PAAm) were synthesized and characterized in terms of their swelling ability, microhardness and morphology. The potential of these new polymeric materials as a sustained delivery system for cationic drug was revealed. The study demonstrates that the IPN's composition is a powerful tool to control the IPN's structure and properties and hence their performance as a new polymeric system for sustained drug delivery.

“…13 Sustained release of drugs from various materials such as hybrid polymers, composites and hydrogels in the form of bulk material or nanocarriers have been reported. [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] For example, two-component system from adamantane-modied and cyclodextrin modied hyaluronic acid were designed to prepare injectable hydrogels for sustained release of small molecules. 18 In another report, vincristine, hydrophobic and commonly used chemotherapeutic agent, was encapsulated within a peptide hydrogel and vincristine was shown to release constantly over the course of one month.…”

“…Polyacrylamide (PAM) has good flocculation property, surface activity, and thickening performance, which result in its broad applications in wastewater treatment, papermaking, and drug delivery. [21][22][23] Poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) contains lots of carboxyl groups and has strong combination ability with metal ion. 24 Our group had synthesized PAM via electrochemically mediated ATRP with Cu(II)/2,2'-bipyridine as catalyst for the detection of Pb 21 .…”
