Interpenetrating Polymer Networks of Hydrocarbon and Fluorocarbon Polymers: Epoxy/Fluorinated Acrylic Macromonomers

Abstract: A fluorinated acrylic resin was synthesized for use as a co‐monomer with a commercially available epoxy resin for UV‐cured interpenetrating polymer network preparation. Hybrid IPN networks were achieved with morphology ranging from a co‐continuous IPN to complete phase separation simply by changing monomer ratios. Highly hydrophobic coatings with good adhesion properties on glass substrates were obtained.

“…The contact angle increases to 85° when 10 wt% of the functionalized filler is added at 10 wt% and further increase to 90°, reaching a hydrophobic behavior, when the filler content is enhanced to 20 wt%. This data suggested the selective migration of the fluorinated functionalized filler toward to lower polar air‐interface as already reported in the literature …”

“…Multifunctionality in a coating formulation is essential, since coatings do not only provide just a certain amount of protection toward the environment or optical appearance to a surface, but they should also provide additional functions such as hydrophobic surfaces, low abrasion, or scratch resistance properties . Regarding the achievement of hydrophobic surface properties, the enhancement strategy by the addition of low amount of fluorinated or silicone monomers is well known . By copolymerizing hydrogenated resins with a small amount of low surface tension additive (such as a fluoro‐additive or a silicone), a deep modification of the surface was obtained without compromise bulk properties of the cured films.…”

“…The main challenge in this direction is to develop toughening agents that do not substantially affect the thermo‐mechanical properties. Various approaches have been developed, for instance, based on additives like block copolymers (BCP), polymer particles, or hyperbranched polymers (HBP) . Another strategy to increase impact resistance is the use of core/shell nanoparticles as proposed by Naguib et al Core/shell crosslinked PBA/PMMA‐PGMA particles were prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization.…”

“…UV-cured IPNs have been widely reported in the literature [4,[19][20][21][32][33][34][35][36]. The kinetics of network formation, mechanical properties and surface morphology are usually the parameters that are investigated.…”
