Internet routing instability

Abstract: This paper examines the network interdomain routing information exchanged between backbone service providers at the major U.S. public Internet exchange points. Internet routing instability, or the rapid fluctuation of network reachability information, is an important problem currently facing the Internet engineering community. High levels of network instability can lead to packet loss, increased network latency and time to convergence. At the extreme, high levels of routing instability have led to the loss of … Show more

“…A change in BGP import policies, such as ltering a route advertisement or assigning di erent l ocal preference values, would change the set of egress links associated with this destination pre x. Similarly, network failures, policy changes in other domains, and even network congestion could result in uctuations in the BGP reachability information 11,12]. These intentional and unintentional changes would result in a new tra c demand.…”

“…The heavy reliance on such mission critical applications has played a vital role in motivating the increased interest in improving the security of the Internet. BGP has always been an interesting topic for the research community mainly due to several concerns related to its convergence [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10], its churn [11][12][13], its limitations in terms of traffic engineering [14][15][16][17], policies [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25], documented anomalies [26][27][28][29][30][31], and other issues [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40], but the recent large scale outages in the Internet acted as a catalyst for reviving the research focus toward its security [41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48]...…”

“…Transitions from stability to instability are manifest in the Internet, which makes it a suitable prototype case for studying the dynamical properties of high dimensional systems [11,21,30,32,36]. A central function of the Internet is to enable any node to communicate with any other node transparently and without significant delays or lost communication.…”
