Internet research using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM)

Abstract: Internet research using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) Innovation and diffusion of PLS-SEM Since Wold (1974) developed the PLS algorithm more than 40 years ago, the method has evolved considerably, particularly in recent years. Indeed, numerous researchers have contributed to expanding awareness and applications of what is now known as PLS-SEM. Today, PLS-SEM belongs to the common portfolio of multivariate analysis methods (Hair, Black, Babin and Anderson, 2018). But the road to … Show more

“…The primary advantages of PLS-SEM include the relaxation of normal distributional assumptions required by PLS-SEM's ability to easily estimate much more complex models with smaller sample sizes (Shiau and Chau, 2016;Hair et al, 2019;Khan et al, 2019;Shiau et al, 2019). PLS-SEM is more suitable for this study under the following situations: when the research objective is exploratory research for theory development, when the analysis is for a prediction perspective; when the structural model is complex, when the structural model includes one or more formative constructs; when distribution is lack of normality, and when research requires latent variable scores for consequent analyses (Shiau and Chau, 2016;Hair et al, 2019;Khan et al, 2019;Shiau et al, 2019). The above reasons provide supports to consider the PLS as an appropriate SEM method for a study.…”

“…In the measurement model, AMOS 23.0 is applied for the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to verify the convergent validity and discriminant validity of the scale. In addition, scholars hold that PLS-SEM is more competent than CB-SEM in estimating much more complex models with smaller sample sizes ( Shiau and Chau, 2016 ; Hair et al, 2019 ; Khan et al, 2019 ; Shiau et al, 2019 ). Compared with CB-SEM, PLS-SEM is more suitable for this study in the following cases: the research objective is exploratory research for theory development; the analysis is conducted for a prediction purpose; the structural model is complex; the structural model includes one or more formative constructs; distribution has a lack of normality; and research requires latent variable scores for consequent analyses ( Gefen et al, 2011 ; Shiau and Chau, 2016 ; Hair et al, 2019 ; Khan et al, 2019 ; Shiau et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Compared with the conventional, covariance-based SEM method, PLS-SEM was more suitable because the goal of the study was to develop a theory. Moreover, PLS-SEM requires no consideration of multivariate normal distribution [66][67][68]. SmartPLS 3.28 software was used to analyze the structural model and the measurement model [69].…”

“…First, at the stage of data collection, the questionnaire was intentionally designed in separate pages to enable the respondents to have an adequate break between pages. A pause reduces the common-method variance effect resulting from continuous use of the same scale [68]. Then, Harman's single-factor test was used to perform principal component analysis to verify whether the common-method variance existed [70].…”
