Internet-of-Things-Based Geotechnical Monitoring Boosted by Satellite InSAR Data

Abstract: Landslides, often a side effect of mining activities, pose a significant risk to humans and infrastructures such as urban areas, power lines, and dams. Operational ground motion monitoring can help detect the spatial pattern of surface changes and their evolution over time. In this technical note, a commercial, cost-effective method combining a network of geotechnical surface sensors with the InSAR data was reported for the first time to accurately monitor surface displacement. The correlation of both data set… Show more

“…The "space-air-ground" integrated monitoring network coordinated using InSAR, UAV, and GNSS technologies was used in the study area. Furthermore, Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring systems are largely used for determining geotechnical information [30]. IoT systems supported by wireless networks can be used to gather, move, and process land displacement data in the mining environments.…”

“…The entire environment is monitored using various sensors that collect different types of data. In fact, IoT devices represent a network of geotechnical surface sensors (as shown in Figure 2) that is responsible for collecting data without human intervention [30]. The devices are connected to a centralized internet-enabled computer that is used to store data.…”

“…SAR is based on radar technology, which is capable of sensing under extreme weather conditions such as rain, clouds, and volcanic ash. Recently, the involvement of satellites, and specifically SAR, in Earth observation, object detection and recognition [1], [2], data communication [3], Internetof-Things (IoT) [4], and more is rapidly increasing. Therefore, the launch of more satellites and especially space-borne SAR [5]- [7] has dramatically increased and is continuously growing.…”
