Internet Education for Spinal Cord Injury Patients: Focus on Urinary Management

Abstract: The goal of this project was to develop a Web site with articles that focus on urinary self-care management for those with spinal cord injuries. The investigator wrote 18 articles on topics that were selected by two review panels--one whose members have long-term spinal cord injuries and another consisting of rehabilitation nurses. The panel members critically reviewed the articles for content and topic. After revisions, nine of the 18 articles were translated from English into Spanish and then translated back… Show more

“…This range of experience and also the constant shift in positions as first the agent of action and thereafter the object of action provide the posters with a virtual nursing competence that can be provided to women who would not otherwise receive this care and support. As the results show, women with thoughts about breast augmentation share their concerns about health through “internet forums.” As earlier addressed by Brillhart (2005, 2007), Internet forums represent a new dimension of possibilities for self-care that can be regarded as a shift in the power structures between health care providers and the possible “patient.” As we have shown, and irrespective of the perception of augmentation mammablastomy as a “relatively simple” question in relation to nursing, there was continuous activity by the posters throughout the span of the procedure as they exchanged information.…”

“…For example, the vast growth in information nurses distribute as part of self-directed educational programs for patients and relatives over the net represents a new means of providing opportunities for self-care (see Brillhart, 2005, 2007; Proudfoot et al, 2007). However, the development of complementary self-care systems does not fill all the gaps in self-care in western societies.…”

“…It is convenient to update and individualize, and offers interactive capabilities. Web-based education can provide guidance, information and encouragement for patients and families with geographic or time restrictions (Brillhart, 2007). For patients and families, it offers the ability to review information at any time, at their own pace and in the privacy of home (McGrath, Watters, & Moon, 2006).…”

“…Several studies have examined the use of electronic diaries for children with gastrointestinal problems (Walker & Sorrells, 2002) and chronic pain (Palermo & Valenzuela, 2003); however, most studies do not formally evaluate the technology. Web-based educational programs “must be based on sound design and educational principles, and contain current, accurate information” (Brillhart, 2007, p. 215). Most importantly, information must be available when the patient expresses readiness to learn (Hymovich, 1995).…”

“…Other studies also deserve to be highlighted and can be organized according to the focus of interest in relation to internet usage: (a) as a work tool for health workers (Calmels, Mick, Perrouin-Verbe, & Ventura, 2009), (b) as a research tool (Anderson, Fridén, & Lieber, 2009;Chelvarajah, Knight, Craggs, & Middleton, 2009;Edwards, Krassioukov, & Fehlings, 2002;Migliorini, New, & Tonge, 2009;Migliorini, Tonge, & Taleporos, 2008), (c) for health education (Brillhart, 2007;Lindsey, Kurilla, & DeVivo, 2002), (d) in the development of interfaces to access a computer and the internet (Choi, Micera, Carpaneto & Kim, 2009) and (e) the search related to the information needs of people with spinal cord injuries (Gontkovsky, Russum, & Stokic, 2007).…”
