Abstract
On the 11th anniversary of the start of the war in Syria, Syrian migration still continues to affect Turkey and Gaziantep. The news reports of Syrian refugees is also published in the Gaziantep local press. These news reports reproduce the value judgments about Syrian refugees in society. In this study, the presentations of Syrian refugees in Gaziantep local press are examined.
Purpose: The first aim of the study is to examine the theme, definition and word preferences of Syrian refugees in Gaziantep local press news. The other purpose of the study is to compare the current data with a research carried out four years ago.
Method: In the research, the news in six newspapers from the Gaziantep local press are analyzed with qualitative content analysis. The research covers the period between March 2021 and March 2022. These results are then compared with the research conducted in 2017.
Findings: There is no positive change in the presentations of Syrian refugees in different periods in newspapers. In addition, recently, examples of new forms of exclusionary practices have been identified in the local press.
Orginality: The research compares with a previous study and reveals the current content of the Syrian descriptions in the Gaziantep local press.
