International Survey of Critically Ill Children With Acute Neurologic Insults: The Prevalence of Acute Critical Neurological Disease in Children: A Global Epidemiological Assessment Study*

Abstract: Objective The international scope of critical neurological insults in children is unknown. Our objective was to assess the prevalence and outcomes of children admitted to pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) with acute neurological insults. Design Prospective study. Setting Multicenter (n=107 PICUs) and multinational (23 countries, 79% in North America and Europe). Patients Children aged 7d–17y admitted to the ICU with new traumatic brain injury, stroke, cardiac arrest, central nervous system infection… Show more

“…Importantly, the PNCP supported this approach to care without requiring creation of a separate service or intensive care unit, making such approach to care easier to reproduce [ 35 ]. As the global impact of neurological diagnoses in critically ill children and the approaches to pediatric neurocritical care continue to be better defined [ 36 39 ] cost of implementation will become easier to assess and compare.…”

“…Mentorship should be complementary of expertise, experience, and understanding, and foster symbiotic relationships. Previous high-impact studies have proven that HIC–LMIC collaboration can successfully improve clinical care, directly benefit the participating communities and give career opportunities to local researchers ( 17 , 33 , 34 ). This should be the paradigm for PCC research study design in LMIC.…”

“…The burden of acute neurologic affliction in pediatric population is high and contributes to 16.2% of the total admissions to pediatric intensive care units (PICU) globally [ 1 ]. Status epilepticus (SE) is the commonest neuro-emergency in children and as per epidemiological studies in western countries, it's estimated incidence in children (18–20 per 100,000 children per year) is much greater than the adult incidence of around 4–6 per 100,000 per year [ [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] ].…”
