The growing number of automated vehicles (AVs) necessitates good ride comfort for passengers. This research investigates currently available ride comfort methods and evaluates their performance with a validated simulation framework. The methodology developed encompasses a high‐precision road surface model and uses Monte Carlo simulations to compile accurate and representative virtual chassis acceleration data. By utilizing a threshold method and standard ISO 2631 ride comfort guidelines, results are compared to classifications based on empirical International Roughness Index data. A case study conducted in Austria specifies that ISO 2631 comfort estimates are most similar to International Roughness Index classifications and that the thresholding procedure detects preventable situations and over‐ or underestimated ride comfort. Thus, this methodology can help to better understand requirements for AVs' comfort, as well as justifying the importance of developing a sophisticated performance metric.

Çalışmada üstyapı performans göstergesi olarak kullanılan Üstyapı Durum İndeksi (PCI) ve yolcu otomobilinde maruz kalınan tüm vücut titreşimi miktarı arasındaki ilişkilerin matematik olarak modellenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Titreşim ölçümleri, teknik detayları ISO 2631 standardında açıklanan frekans ağırlıklı veri işleme yöntemine göre analiz edilerek düşey doğrultuda aw değerleri elde edilmiştir. Bitümlü sıcak karışım üstyapıya sahip bir kentsel yol ağında belirlenen yol kesimlerinde, PCI değerleri ve 20-50 km/sa sürüş hızı aralığında yapılan gerçek titreşim ölçüm verileri arasındaki matematiksel ilişkiler doğrusal regresyon analizi kullanılarak modellenmiştir. Modellerin istatistik olarak uyumları incelenmiştir. Her bir sürüş hızı için oluşturulan matematik model aracılığıyla PCI’ın sürüş konforunu etkileyen eşik değerleri ve PAVER sistemince önerilen geleneksel değerlendirme ölçeğindeki PCI sınır değerlerine karşılık gelen sürüş konforu değerleri belirlenmiştir. Değerlendirilen hız aralığında PCI sınır değerleri sırasıyla ‘az konforsuz - biraz konforsuz’ eşiğinde 0, 11, 29, 41, ‘konforlu - az konforsuz’ eşiğinde 37, 62, 69, 77 olarak bulunmuştur. Son olarak doğrusal regresyon analizi yöntemi ile üretilen eşik değerleri literatürde bulunan önceki çalışmalarda lojistik regresyon, bulanık mantık ve yapay sinir ağları teknikleri ile elde edilen eşik değerleri ile kıyaslanmıştır. Doğrusal regresyon analizinin diğer tekniklere nazaran daha düşük PCI eşik değerleri verdiği tespit edilmiştir.

In a future connected vehicle environment, an optimized route and motion planning should not only fulfill efficiency and safety constraints but also minimize vehicle motions and oscillations, causing poor ride comfort perceived by passengers. This work provides a framework for a large-scale and cost-efficient evaluation to address AV's ride comfort and allow the comparison of different comfort assessment strategies. The proposed tool also gives insights to comfort data, allowing for the development of novel algorithms, guidelines, or motion planning systems incorporating passenger comfort. A vehicle-road simulation framework utilizable to assess the most common ride comfort determination strategies based on vehicle dynamics data is presented. The developed methodology encompasses a road surface model, a non-linear vehicle model optimization, and Monte Carlo simulations to allow for an accurate and cost-efficient generation of virtual chassis acceleration data. Ride comfort is determined by applying a commonly used threshold method and an analysis based on ISO 2631. The two methods are compared against comfort classifications based on empirical measurements of the International Roughness Index (IRI). A case study with three road sites in Austria demonstrates the framework's practical application with real data and achieves high-resolution ride comfort classifications. The results highlight that ISO 2631 comfort estimates are most similar to IRI classifications and that the thresholding procedure detects preventable situations but also over-or underestimates ride comfort. Hence, the work shows the potential risk of negative ride comfort of AVs using simple threshold values and stresses the importance of a robust comfort evaluation method for enhancing AVs' path and motion planning with maximal ride comfort.
