International Remittances and Private Healthcare in Kerala, India

Abstract: The inflow of international remittances to Kerala has been increasing over the last three decades. It has increased the income of recipient households and enabled them to spend more on human capital investment. “…Usually, foreign workers send remittances in the form of cash or goods to their relatives, and contribute to the alleviation of poverty, especially in developing and least-developed countries. In addition, remittances can stimulate investments and consumption, and increase economic growth (Eggoh et al, 2019;Khan and Valatheeswaran, 2020). Returning migrants can bring home their experience and knowledge and contribute not only to the development of the economy, but also to cultural and political changes (Pérez-Armendáriz and Crow, 2010;Dudu and Rojo, 2021).…”

“…This is important as it suggests that the outcome of receiving remittances extends well-beyond its' monetary worth, by encompassing nonpecuniary gains. A number of studies have shown that these remittances not only increase the disposable income and consumption levels of recipient households, but also help reduce poverty, increase long-run economic development and improve overall standards of living by enabling these poor households to invest in better quality healthcare and education (Khan & Valatheeswaran, 2020;Munoz & Collazo, 2019;Nicoli, Kachingwe & Kaput, 2018;Biyase, 2012;Lu & Treiman, 2007;Rapoport & Docquier, 2006). Despite the known importance of domestic remittances in South Africa, very few studies have examined their impact on the SWB of recipient individuals (see one South African study which focuses on remittances and a static component of SWB by Kruger, 2017).…”
