International multicentre prospective study on microwave ablation of liver tumours: preliminary results

Abstract: These multi-institution data demonstrate rapid ablation time and low morbidity and mortality rates in patients undergoing operative MWA with a high rate of multiple ablations and concomitant hepatic resection. Longterm follow-up will be required to determine the efficacy of MWA relative to other forms of ablative therapy.

“…The safety of VLA for HCC had so far been reported for series of no more than 267 patients treated with RFA, and 203 treated with MWA . The vast majority of the complications described to date (in 2% to 45% of patients treated with VL RFA, and in 16% to 62% of those treated with VL MWA) were minor. The use of MWA has nonetheless been widely questioned because of the potentially higher risk of major biliary damage associated with the greater amount of energy delivered.…”

“…More recent antenna designs are now available to create more focal, shorter ablation zones that are centered more toward the tip of the antenna (14,7678). Such antennas are particularly helpful when treating small or peripheral tumors.…”

“…In the last years alternative techniques have been developed, as ablation by radio frequencies, chemoembolization, radioembolization, magnetic chemotherapy and cryo-ablation, for local treatment of the liver tumour [8]- [12].…”
