International movement of open access to scientific knowledge: A quantitative analysis of country involvement

Abstract: The study aims are to conduct a systematic quantitative analysis of Open Access (OA) Instruments and Initiatives, justify and develop the methodology for calculating the index of countries' involvement in the Open Access movement. The authors identified all the significant OA-Instruments and OA-Initiatives, which were counted on the basis of the records in their OA-registers. Consolidation of records in these registers, according to literature data from the moment of their launch, made it possible to identify … Show more

“…The above findings were confirmed by Moskovin et al (2021), 11 who conducted a systematic quantitative analysis to evaluate open access instruments and initiatives and developed a methodology for calculating the involvement of countries in the open access movement. They concluded that scientists from low-income countries are more motivated than those from high-income countries to publish their articles in open access journals or platforms partially because their articles may be poorly cited, if not accessible publicly.…”

“…OARs, the digital scholarly archives which mandate green road to OA, have become the technological hubs to host free content from organizations all across the globe. Keeping in view the beneficial aspects of OARs for researchers, scholars and OA advocates, their mushrooming growth has been witnessed all across the globe (Ahmed et al, 2014; Bhat, 2010; Chantavaridou, 2009; Loan and Sheikh, 2016; Melero et al, 2009; Moskovkin et al, 2021; Pinfield et al, 2014; Siviwe, 2018b; van Westrienen and Lynch, 2005; Wani et al, 2009). The race has now become unstoppable because they reflect one of the brightest and most excellent sides of the open scholarly publication process.…”

“…In addition to the disciplinary differences, there are large disparities between countries in OA adoption (Martín-Martín et al, 2018). Unfortunately, there is limited awareness of OA publishing in Israel and there is no policy or legislation regarding OA publishing issues (Moskovkin et al, 2021)., The aim of this study was to formulate and validate a comprehensive research model regarding the acceptance and usage of OA in Israel, and to determine the factors that lead Israeli researchers to publish in OA journals and repositories. Thus, the current study examined Israeli researchers' perceptions, attitudes, and awareness from various research disciplines concerning scientific publications in OA journals and repositories, in order to determine which of these factors influence researchers' behavioral intentions.…”
