International equine gene mapping workshop report: a comprehensive linkage map constructed with data from new markers and by merging four mapping resources

Abstract: A comprehensive male linkage map was generated by adding 359 new, informative microsatellites to the International Equine Gene Map half-sibling reference families and by combining genotype data from three independent mapping resources: a full sibling family created at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, United Kingdom, eight half-sibling families from Sweden and two half-sibling families from the University of California, Davis. Because the combined data were derived primarily from half-sibling families, onl… Show more

“…The former whole genome scan was performed with relative marker positions in cM taken from Swinburne et al (2006) and Penedo et al (2005). The release of the horse genome has made it possible to verify the QTL on the horse genome assembly (EquCab2) (Figure 1).…”

“…It is known that the recessive e gene increases the amount of white markings (Woolf 1992). Considering the low frequency of the e allele in Hucul population and the linkage between the MC1R and KIT loci (Penedo et al 2005), there would be little probability of a chestnut crypto-tobiano Hucul. Hence, at least in the case of the crypto-tobianos found in the study, the white patches could not have been increased by the e allele activity.…”

“…The fact can be attributed to easy allowance of chestnut mares to the breeding and may be connected with the rising tobiano horse occurrence. The linked MC1R and KIT loci are separated by only 20-34 cM, hence the crossing over in that region may occur not often (Penedo et al, 2005). Theoretically, e.g.…”
