International electronic health record-derived post-acute sequelae profiles of COVID-19 patients

Abstract: The risk profiles of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) have not been well characterized in multi-national settings with appropriate controls. We leveraged electronic health record (EHR) data from 277 international hospitals representing 414,602 patients with COVID-19, 2.3 million control patients without COVID-19 in the inpatient and outpatient settings, and over 221 million diagnosis codes to systematically identify new-onset conditions enriched among patients with COVID-19 during the post-acute period. … Show more

“…Our findings are in accordance with the results provided by Zhang et al [ 18 ] which observed an increased risk of HF in COVID-19 survivors within 89 days, but their results were presented as risk ratio and therefore they were not included in our meta-analysis. Indeed, it would be incorrect to pool risk ratio and hazard ratio together since they evaluate different outcomes from different study designs.…”

“…This is because PASC appears to be a clinical syndrome that encompasses a constellation of sometimes non-specific symptoms (e.g., pain, fatigue, brain fog) that are not well represented or not often coded using administrative coding schemas. 5,10 We investigated whether or not textual data extracted using natural language processing pipelines can better capture the symptomatology associated with PASC for a patient that was extracted in chart review. For seven common symptoms associated with PASC, we examined the data capture of each symptom by (1) ICD-10 codes alone, (2) natural language processing (NLP) of clinical narratives (e.g.…”

“…/2022 between SARS-CoV-2 infection and PASC symptoms and conditions [7,[16][17][18][19][20][21]. Research on PASC among children is emerging, with few studies using large cohorts or comparing hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients [22][23][24]. Symptoms and conditions following SARS-CoV-2 infection among children and non-hospitalized adults also have not been well characterized with large samples.…”
