International collaboration and counting inflation in the assessment of national research productivity

Abstract: In this paper we describe how different accounting procedures affected the counting of scientific paper numbers at the country level and the country ranks based on paper production quantity in physics. Using 1989Using -2008 citation data, we also report the counting inflation ratio between different accounting procedures. We found that, in general, different accounting procedures yielded relatively similar and stable rankings. But for certain clusters of countries, the normal count procedure tended to favor t… Show more

“…This type of financing is important as it introduces the Brazilian student or researcher to groups abroad, it works as a seed from which collaboration can grow, if it does not already exist. Collaboration also improves the quality of future generations of researchers, which is important for a developing country (Huang and Lin 2010 ). This sets the need for Brazilian agencies to look at their financing procedures to improve these indicators.…”

“…To compare whether the result would differ significantly, further studies of LIS papers using multiple counting methods should be conducted. Recently, Huang and Lin (2010) analyzed a large set of physics journal articles and tested the effects of five author counting methods on country ranks. The researchers found that while small variations in rankings existed for certain clusters of countries, the counting methods did not greatly affect the country ranks.…”

“…The increasing average number of authors per publication and the growth of international collaboration in the sciences pose a challenge as to how to attribute credit at the individual, institution and country levels (Cronin, Snyder, & Atkins, 2001; Gauffriau, Larsen, Maye, Roulin‐Perriard, & Ins, 2008; Huang & Lin. 2010; Kao, 2009; Pravdić & Oluić‐Vukovic, 1986, 1991). Although it has been shown that different counting methods produce different rankings in publication performance, a consensus has not yet emerged.…”
