Abstract.Since the early 1990s, Central and Eastern Europe has attracted international business research into the interaction between radical societal change and business development in these emerging market economies. This research has effectively utilized institutional theories, and thus revealed limitations of similar applications in other contexts, while setting the stage for more refined argumentations, especially with respect to rapidly changing contexts. This introductory paper outlines both economic and the sociological perspectives on the influence of institutions on business, and thus sets the stage for this Special Issue. On this basis, we introduce the five papers in this special issue, and outline an agenda for future research.

This paper looks at the issue of language selection in international online communications. Traditionally, online communications have primarily been written in English, and justifi ed by the fact that English is the ' language of commerce ' . This assumption ignores the issue that local language use in international online communications could lead to better fi rm performance in international markets. While English may be appropriate in some circumstances, the effectiveness of online marketing communications may also be compromised. This issue is particularly relevant today as the number of non-English web users has surpassed the number of English-speaking web users, and as web penetration in developing markets continues to expand. While online user preference for English vis-à -vis a native language may vary by country, this paper argues that language selection for online communications must be given more serious consideration by multinationals in developing effective communication strategies, and that English should not automatically be considered the language of choice. The issue of language preference was investigated via an empirical study of web user preferences in two emerging markets: Serbia and the Ukraine. Seven psychographic scales were selected from the literature on the basis of their likelihood in differentiating between types of internet usage. The results suggest that country-by-country orientations are likely to vary -even within a region -and that these differences must be considered by international fi rms in devising effective internet communications.

In certain locations, foreign investors frequently use partial acquisitions (PAs) to access locational advantages controlled by local firms. This chapter aims to explain the use of PAs as a mode of entry in emerging economies, based on two unique samples of foreign direct investments in transition economies and a review of recent entry mode literature. Theoretical considerations and empirical data show that PAs are insufficiently explained by combining arguments for acquisitions (viz Greenfield) and for joint ventures (viz wholly-owned subsidiary). We thus challenge some of the assumptions and assertions of recent entry mode research. In particular, reverse asymmetric information effect may override buyers' informational disadvantages. Thus, PAs are often desired by sellers to attain a share in the expected increase of the firm's value. JEL classification: F21, F23, L222
