International Adaptation of a Treatment Program for Situational Couple Violence

Abstract: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a serious international problem. Stith, S. M., McCollum, E. E., and Rosen, K. H. received funding from the US National Institute of Mental Health to develop and test a program for couples experiencing IPV: Domestic Violence Focused Couples Treatment (DVFCT). This article provides an overview of DVFCT, and presents three case studies illustrating how DVFCT has been adapted for use in Colombia, Iran, and Finland. This article emphasizes the need for adapting treatment models to… Show more

“…Our study results also suggest the relevance of dyadic models and family systems approaches for IPV (Stith et al, 2020). A number of meta-analyses and systematic reviews have attempted to synthesize the overall findings of studies examining the efficacy of various conjoint programs, as opposed to gender-specific programs (Cheng et al, 2019; Feder & Wilson, 2005; Murphy & Ting, 2010).…”

“…From this perspective, the fact that the solution-focused approach is basically procedural and content-free would make it suitable to address a variety of contents in a diversity of contexts. In fact, we only found two papers that performed an explicit cultural adaptation of SFBT ( González et al, 2016 ; Stith et al, 2020 ). Furthermore, the finding that in most studies the solution-focused element was the only component of the tested SFI intervention confirms that the globalization of research on SFBT has not required ad hoc adaptations of the solution-focused procedures.…”

“…Experiences of IPV been found to be impacted by contextual factors, like race, sexuality, and culture (Malley-Morrison & Hines, 2004), yet there is limited recognition for these factors in the described treatment modalities and limited research examining how these factors impact treatment outcomes for couples. Stith and colleagues (2020), recognizing this need, created three international adaptations for their approach, DVFCT, and an examination on how this was done was provided in the article. The adapted protocols in Iran and Colombia yielded positive results, while the adapted protocol in Finland had not been tested at the time of publication.…”
