Internalizing disorders and quality of life in adolescence: evidence for independent associations

Abstract: Objective: To investigate whether internalizing disorders are associated with quality of life (QoL) in adolescents, even after accounting for shared risk factors. Methods: The sample comprised 102 adolescents from a community cross-sectional study with an oversampling of anxious subjects. Risk factors previously associated with QoL were assessed and divided into five blocks organized hierarchically from proximal to distal sets of risk factors. Results: Multiple regression analysis yielded a hierarchical model … Show more

“…Given the contextually bounded nature of emerging symptoms, some researchers have suggested that a systemic approach to treatment may be most appropriate (Retzlaff, Sydow, Beher, Haun, & Schweitzer, 2013). Subsequently, viewing the pathology inherent within internalizing disorders through a systemic lens has been demonstrated as useful among youth (Retzlaff et al, 2013), adolescents (Salum et al, 2014), and adults (Harford et al, 2013; Scott, Dennis, & Lurigio, 2015).…”

“…In relation to our second hypothesis, the internalizing problems were the strongest predictor of HRQOL of all socio‐emotional functioning domains. Although never examined in children and adolescents with mild to moderate CKD, the link between internalizing problems and HRQOL is well established in children and adolescents with attention deficit disorder (ADD) (Schraegle & Titus, 2016; Sherman et al, 2006) and epilepsy (Salum et al, 2014). In fact, internalizing problems were a stronger predictor of HRQOL in children and adolescents with epilepsy than frequency of seizures, age of onset, and duration of disease (Besta et al, 2011; Sherman et al, 2006).…”
