Internalization of the Aspergillus nidulans AstA Transporter into Mitochondria Depends on Growth Conditions, and Affects ATP Levels and Sulfite Oxidase Activity

Abstract: The astA gene encoding an alternative sulfate transporter was originally cloned from the genome of the Japanese Aspergillus nidulans isolate as a suppressor of sulfate permease-deficient strains. Expression of the astA gene is under the control of the sulfur metabolite repression system. The encoded protein transports sulfate across the cell membrane. In this study we show that AstA, having orthologs in numerous pathogenic or endophytic fungi, has a second function and, depending on growth conditions, can be t… Show more

“…Studies in A. nidulans have demonstrated that the sB gene is located on chromosome VI, whose transcriptional regulation relies on sulfur sources. 90 , 91 Defective sB gene strains did not grow on sulfate as the sole sulfur source. However, they grew well on choline sulfate, which is taken up by a different permease.…”

“…However, experiments on mutants compromised with methionine to cysteine conversion indicated that the mutants are regulatory effectors. 90 , 94 This transcriptional regulation is dependent on the sulfur metabolite repression (SMR) system. 93–95 96 97 Recently, it has been observed that high-affinity sulfate transporter of S. indica (SiSulT) uptake sulfate from media and transfer to the host plant.…”

“…The MFS transporters are one of the largest superfamilies of membrane transporters [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. They have a broad spectrum of substrates, including sugars, polyols, metabolites and even inorganic tetraoxyanions [ 14 , 15 , 17 ]. Most MFS transporters harbor either 12 or 14 putative transmembrane domains (TM) [ 18 ].…”
