Internal Waves Study on a Narrow Steep Shelf of the Black Sea Using the Spatial Antenna of Line Temperature Sensors

Abstract: The results of investigations into internal waves on a narrow steep shelf of the northeastern coast of the Black Sea are presented here. To measure the parameters of internal waves, the spatial antenna of three autonomous line temperature sensors were equipped in the depth range of 17 to 27 m. In observations that lasted for 10 days, near-inertial internal waves with a period close to 17 h and short-period internal waves with periods of 2–8 min, regularly approaching the coast, were revealed. The wave amplitud… Show more

“…These are in good agreement with the typical phase propagation speeds of IWs in the ocean (e.g. Tintoré et al, 1995;Miropol'sky & Shishkina, 2013;Serebryany et al, 2020). Furthermore, a dominant shoreward propagation component (positive wavenumbers) is evident.…”

“…Multi-day continuous recording of currents was carried out using an ADCP Rio Grande 600 kHz current meter lowered from a stationary platform located on the shelf at a depth of 13 m. The vertical shift of temperature and sound velocity in the coastal zone was monitored using CTD and SVP probes. A more detailed description of such measurements in this area is given in [23].…”

“…For the former aspect, we included the work of Vieira et al [1], proposing the first cheap and simple stereo-based technique to estimate the 3D sea surface elevation from inexpensive smartphones. For the latter, the paper of Serebryany et al [2] investigates internal waves on a narrow steep shelf of the northeastern coast of the Black Sea using the spatial antenna of line temperature sensors. We also included a discussion on space-time wave extremes in the paper of Benetazzo et al [3] and a comparison of assimilated coastal wave data by Yukiharu Hisaki [4].…”
