Internal reforming in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells running on natural gas

Abstract: Abstract. Methane steam reforming has been studied over a range of nickel/ceria-gadolinia cermet anodes, over the temperature range 500-700 ~ appropriate for intermediate temperature ceriagadolinia based SOFCs. The influence of operating temperature and methane/steam ratio on the reforming characteristics, methane conversion and product selectivity, and the carbon deposition on the anode during reforming, has been determined for each anode.Nickel/ceria powders made from gas atomised intermetallic precursors ha… Show more

“…5 Ceria and ceria-based materials present better catalytic activity than YSZ for reforming and oxidation of hydrocarbons at lower temperatures 6,7 since they prevent the typical coke deposition that takes place in Ni-YSZ anodes. 8,9 This excellent catalytic performance together with a good thermomechanical compatibility with a ceria-based electrolyte makes ceria cermets a typical anode of choice for IT-SOFCs. 10 Apart from material composition issues, the microstructure of the anodes, particularly if they are cermets, plays a key role in their performance.…”

“…Nanoparticulate CeO 2 has been tested recently as a fuel additive to catalyze combustion reactions between diesel and air (Trovarelli, 1996). Catalyst cartridges bearing commercial CeO 2 have been shown to efficiently reduce the concentration of NO x , unburned hydrocarbons, and CO in car exhausts under real running engine conditions (Chung et al, 2003). These applications may lead to the introduction of fine grained, reactive CeO 2 into the environment, where it is capable of the low-temperature decarboxylization and polymerization of organic compounds.…”

“…Moreover, ceria and ceria-based materials present better catalytic and electrocatalytic activities for reforming and oxidation of hydrocarbons and hydrogen at lower temperatures (4). Using ceria in combination with nickel also prevents the typical carbon deposition taken place in Ni-YSZ anodes for systems fueled with hydrocarbons (5,6).…”
