Internal Knee Derangement Assessed with 3-minute Three-dimensional Isovoxel True FISP MR Sequence: Preliminary Study

Abstract: The diagnostic performance of knee MR imaging performed by using a 3D water excitation isovoxel true FISP sequence and an imaging time of approximately 3 minutes is comparable to the diagnostic performance of the MR sequences used as standards at the authors' institution.

“…In a study of the knee joint [14], TrueFISP provided excellent image quality, reaching 3.78 ± 0.5 from a maximum of 4 points in 37 patients after matrixassociated autologous chondrocyte transplantation (MACT). Also, TrueFISP was recommended for monitoring osteoarthritis disease progression at the knee, particularly due to the high SNR/ CNR values [16,17]. A regional decrease in image quality because of artifacts, as present in our patient group, was also reported in other studies [11,14,18].…”

“…Some investigators also used 3D gradient echo sequences to better study knee abnormalities [10,11,[21][22][23]. Ruehm et al [11] investigated an optimized 3D dual echo steady state (3D DESS) sequence.…”

“…Duc et al [21] used a 3D isovoxel true fast imaging with steady-state precession (FISP) sequence with water excitation and secondary multiplanar reformations (acquisition time, 3 min) and examined 29 patients concerning the accuracy in detecting meniscal, cartilage and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) abnormalities. Using arthroscopy as their standard of reference, a diagnostic performance of the 3D FISP sequence was found that was comparable to the 2D FSE standard sequence.…”

“…This technique includes gradient echo sequence and, more recently, fast spin echo sequences with variable flip-angle that have been successfully applied in evaluation of the musculoskeletal system [19][20][21][22][23][24] , the ankle, and the foot. After the advent of 3T MR scanner, enhanced signalto-noise ratio, higher spatial resolution, and the greater contrast-noise ratio of intrinsic joint structures at higher field strength are possible supplementary ways to improve the diagnostic ability of 3D isotropic resolution imaging 24)25) .…”
