Internal jugular vein thrombosis with OHSS

Abstract: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) includes ovarian enlargement and ascites. It is usually mild but can be, rarely, fatal. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is among the potentially fatal complications of OHSS. During pregnancy, DVT is more common in the lower extremities than in the upper part of the body, but OHSS-related DVT occurs more frequently in the upper part. Internal jugular vein thrombosis is considered rare, and duplex ultrasound is the appropriate examination for its diagnosis. We present a rare c… Show more

“…Internal jugular vein thrombosis is a rare vascular event that can be defined as the formation of a thrombus located intraluminally in the internal jugular vein. The most common etiologies include prolonged central venous catheterization, intravenous drug use [ 1 , 2 ], ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome [ 3 ], infection and malignancy [ 4 , 5 ]. This affection may result in serious complications such as pulmonary embolism and post-thrombotic syndrome.…”

“…53 Thromboembolism is considered the most severe complication related to OHSS, and unusual site thrombosis involving the veins of the upper extremities and the internal jugular or cerebral veins has been reported. 54 55 56 In women with severe OHSS, a VTE incidence of 1 to 4% has been reported. Therefore, guidelines recommended thromboprophylaxis with LMWH for up to 3 months after the resolution of OHSS.…”

“…Moreover, if hypercoagulability develops further, thrombosis may occur, which is the most serious and life-threatening complication of IVF. Thromboembolic disease has been reported in many sites of patients with OHSS, including in the internal jugular, subclavian, axillary, ulnar, popliteal, cortical, mesenteric, coronary, and cerebral vessels (7)(8)(9). To prevent the occurrence of thrombosis, it is crucial to accurately assess the hypercoagulability in patients with OHSS.…”
