Internal Infrastructural Impacts on RFID Perceptions and Commitment: Knowledge, Operational Procedures, and Information‐Processing Standards

Abstract: For many firms, radio frequency identification (RFID) suggests not only a new alternative to existing tracking methods but also a means to a range of previously cost-prohibitive internal control and supply chain coordination innovations. In any event, and even in light of possible external pressures to adopt, the full potential of RFID for an individual firm must ultimately be viewed in consideration with the infrastructural capabilities of that firm. Furthermore, because adoption decisions are fundamentally b… Show more

“…Furthermore, Bendoly et al (2007), Bovenschulte et al (2007), and Lai et al (2006) all concluded that the full benefits realization of RFID-enabled supply chain projects depends on knowledge transfer and knowledge sharing across early adopters of RFID technology and late adopters, and those who are still exploring and evaluating the potential benefits of technology for them. These studies strongly suggest that (1) it is necessary to set frameworks, guidelines, tools, and mechanisms to help define -in a better way -the scope of the RFID supply chain project and the level of organization transformation and (2) it is necessary to identify the realistic benefits and costs at the supply chain level as well as at the firm level.…”

“…However, this contingency factor becomes even more critical, at the network level, to promote the wider adoption and use of RFID technology across the entire supply chain. The management literature reviewed in the previous section has shown the importance of the focal firm leadership to form a coalition of change leadership which includes the senior management of the key supplier firms (Argyris & Schon, 1978;Argyris, 1991;Van de Ven & Poole, 1995;Newman, 2000;Schein, 2004;Kotter, 2007;Kotter & Schlesinger, 2008) and prior to research on RFID adoption (Ngai & Gunasekaran, 2009;Bendoly et al, 2007, Bovenschulte et al, 2007Lai et al, 2006).…”

“…Scholars in support of RFID have argued its potential to improve supply chain operational effectiveness and efficiency. These scholars propose RFID as a new alternative to existing tracking methods and a means to a wide range of previously cost-prohibitive internal control and supply chain coordination innovations (Bendoly et al, 2007;Bottani and Rizzi, 2008;Rekik et al, 2008;Uckun et al, 2008). Regardless, given the external pressures to adopt coupled with the potential benefits of RFID, the adoption decision is for the most part based on managerial opinion (Vijayaraman and Osyk, 2006;Angeles, 2007;Bendoly et al, 2007;Cannon et al, 2008;Angeles, 2009).…”
