Internal-Illumination Photoacoustic Tomography Enhanced by a Graded-Scattering Fiber Diffuser

Abstract: The penetration depth of photoacoustic imaging in biological tissues has been fundamentally limited by the strong optical attenuation when light is delivered externally through the tissue surface. To address this issue, we previously reported internal-illumination photoacoustic imaging using a customized radial-emission optical fiber diffuser, which, however, has complex fabrication, high cost, and non-uniform light emission. To overcome these shortcomings, we have developed a new type of low-cost fiber diffus… Show more

“…This setup provides a good solution for the clinical translation of PA imaging to guide RF ablation. Another study from Li et al [ 149 ] proposed a new strategy to enhance the internal illumination based on the designed graded-scattering fiber diffuser, which may be applied to improve the optical illumination for PA imaging of ablation progression.…”

“…However, both types of illumination typically cover only a small field of view, mostly because of the limited beam-diverging distance between the fiber tip and the tissue surface. 92 Reproduced with permission from. 49,50,87,92 To illuminate a larger field of view, such as the adult kidney, Li et al have proposed to use an optical fiber diffuser for internal light delivery in PAT.…”
