Internal energy distribution in electrospray ionization

Abstract: Internal energies and energy distributions were studied using the 'survival yield' method developed previously. In addition to conventional benzylpyridinium salts, protonated esters (fragmenting by rearrangement) and protonated leucine enkephalin were also used, extending the validity of the technique. Fragmentation processes were studied in the cone voltage region and modeled by the RRKM-based MassKinetics program. The results show that the shapes of the energy distributions are similar to thermal distributio… Show more

“…p-Chloro-benzylpyridinium chloride (p-Cl), p-methylbenzylpyridinium bromide (p-CH 3 ), p-methoxybenzylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate (p-OCH 3 ), and p-nitro-benzylpyridinium bromide (p-NO 2 ) were purchased from the Florida Center for Heterocyclic Compounds, University of Florida-Gainesville, while p-cyano-benzylpyridinium chloride (p-CN) was synthesized in-house as described elsewhere [56]. Methanol/ water (1:1) solutions of the mixed salts were prepared at concentrations of 10 Ϫ4 M each for the DESI experiments and 10 Ϫ6 M each for the ESI and ESSI experiments.…”

“…3 ) and p-methoxybenzylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate (para-OCH 3 ) were purchased from the Florida Center for Heterocyclic Compounds, University of Florida, Gainesville, while p-cyanobenzylpyridinium chloride (para-CN) was synthesized in-house following the method described elsewhere [36]. Micromolar (10 Ϫ6 M) solutions of the para-CH 3 , para-OCH 3 , para-NO 2 , and para-CN salts were prepared in MeOH/H 2 O (1:1) solution.…”

“…Simply setting the relevant software control to the same temperature setting does not ensure that the same degree of heating is achieved by the different heating configurations. The work of Collette et al and others [24,26,45] to characterize the temperature of the thermometer ions therefore becomes of practical utility in estimating the impact of ion source temperature with respect to its influence on the reproducibility of spectra. However, a simpler strategy than fitting the data from multiple thermometer ion species to a Boltzmann distribution might facilitate its use in routine analysis of analytical samples.…”
