Abstract

Although there is much research on topics related to internationalization, entrepreneurship and innovation in the context of firms, little has been studied to understand the behavior of these variables in the context of cities. Research made on Scielo and Scopus bases, especially from 2014 to 2019, allows to observe correlation between internationalization, innovation and entrepreneurship, considering firm's context. Through internationalization, organizations gain access to new markets and new resources. Recent studies have also used internationalization as a strategy to address urban problems. This research aim to understand the relationship between the dimensions internationalization, innovation and entrepreneurship in the cities context, especially in Brazilian cities, and analyze if there are impacts on wealth generation and employment increase. Although several variables may affect economic performance and employment rates in cities, this research focuses on internationalization, entrepreneurship and innovation. Existing studies addressing these dimensions and their impact on the economic cities performance were not identified. Research can be useful to support public policy formulation as well as to identify best practices, illuminating new forms of analysis of city governance. Thus, the objective of the research is to analyze the influence of the internationalization, entrepreneurship and innovation dimensions on the economic performance of cities. The methodology used was quantitative, and the selected sample was 35 municipalities of the State of São Paulo. Through multivariate analysis -Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) -secondary database, the relationship of the research dimensions was analyzed. Using the correlation matrix and simple linear regressions, the ones that presented the strongest correlation were: entrepreneurship and export volume; export volume and formal employment rate; export volume and gross domestic product (GDP); and entrepreneurship and formal employment rates. Through multiple linear regressions, it was found that there is influence of the internationalization, innovation and entrepreneurship dimensions on economic performance, especially on the employment rates of the municipalities. This is a pioneering study on this subject.
