Intermodal transportation of full and empty containers in harbor-inland regions based on revenue management

Abstract: Introduction: The transport of full containers and repositioning of empty containers are essential for the operation of a container logistic enterprise. In a large inland region, railway and road transportation take their own advantages for container transportation in terms of transport efficiency and costs. The combination of the two modes creates larger possibility for logistic enterprise to provide efficient service and reduce operation costs. Thus, this paper aims to optimize the inland intermodal transpor… Show more

“…These studies involve the rational allocation and scheduling of empty containers without cargo loading in the process of cargo transportation. The main purpose of these studies is to balance the number of containers in various places and avoid the backlog of empty containers in one place and the shortage of empty containers in another place [42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50].…”

“…Sarmadi et al [12] proposed a dry port network of empty container repositioning considering the randomness of demand, and jointly optimized the flow of heavy and empty containers. Peng et al [13] comprehensively considered the two modes of inland railway transportation and road transportation, and put forward the optimization method of empty container multimodal transport in the inland hinterland, so as to maximize the profit of logistics enterprises. In recent years, multimodal transport has become increasingly prosperous, and there are more and more studies on empty container repositioning between sea-land transport, which mainly include the cooperation between terminals and ports, sea-land coordinated transport and so on.…”
