Intermittent exposures to nanoTesla range, 7 Hz, amplitude-modulated magnetic fields increase regeneration rates in planarian

Abstract: Naturally-patterned, intermittently-presented weaker electromagnetic fields may produce enhanced regeneration rates in flat worms similar to those observed for 60 Hz, higher intensity fields.

“…There are researchers that treat decapitated planarians with weak nonuniform magnetic fields (RMFs) and found RMFs eliminated the formation of edema and blastema, which through upregulating the expression of EGR4, Netrin 2, NSE, and NPY accelerates nerve cell proliferation and function recovery [31][32][33]. The weak magnetic field stimulates the fission frequency of the Planarian Dugesia (Girardia) tigrina [32].…”

“…Two distinct physiological effects (i.e., regeneration rate and regeneration anomalies) on planarian regeneration have been shown when planarians were exposed to weak extremely low‐frequency (ELF) magnetic fields and weaker electromagnetic fields [Jenrow et al, ; Yamaguchi‐Sekino et al, ]. An intense magnetic field (nanoTesla range, 7 Hz) also induced a faster regeneration rate of photoreceptors and auricles in planarians compared to those of control groups [Gang et al, ]. However, to date there is no research concerning the effects of LG‐HMF on planarians.…”

“…Therefore, the planarians are commonly used for the investigation of morphogenetic processes such as the wound healing, the regeneration, and the stem cells biology. Due to the high sensitivity of the processes of neoblasts proliferation and differentiation to the weak and ultra weak physical factors (magnetic fields) and to the low concentrations of chemical factors (hormones and neuromediators), planarians can serve as a convenient model organism for “in vivo” study of the biological mechanisms of LTAP impact at the cellular and whole organism level …”
