Intermediate‐Scale Investigation of Nonaqueous‐Phase Liquid Architecture on Partitioning Tracer Test Performance

Abstract: Partitioning interwell tracer tests (PITTs) have been proposed as a tool to characterize source zones of waste sites with chemicals entrapped in the form of nonaqueous‐phase liquids (NAPLs). This technique has the potential to be applied to NAPL source characterization of both the vadose and saturated zones, but the recent applications have been primarily focused on dense NAPLs (DNAPLs) entrapped below the water table. This study presents an intermediate‐scale experiment to investigate the applicability of the… Show more

“…We have to emphasize that although numerous other techniques are used in θ monitoring, the technique based on gamma-ray attenuation is well established and employed to this day [12,[32][33][34][35][36]. This nuclear method enables fast (for high-activity radioactive sources) and accurate measurements of θ [20].…”

Trichloroethene (TCE) (ACS grade) was employed as a representative DNAPL, and 2-propanol (IPA) (HPLC grade), which is miscible with water, was used as a solvent in preparing samples for analysis.…”
