“…In Wang L’s study, the 5-year DFS and OS were 79.0% and 73.5%, respectively, which higher than our analysis and other researches13. However, the elderly patients (≥70 years old) in Wang L’s study only made up the minority (about 10%), while the patients in our study were all elderly.…”

“…Therefore, to avoid the late toxicity caused by the high doses in a single fraction, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) designed an intermediate pre-operative RT regimen (30Gy/10f/2w, which has a biologically equivalent dose to that of the regimen of 5*5Gy). Some clinical trials conducted at our hospital showed that this regimen led to a favorable curative effect1213. This retrospective analysis aims to validate our hypothesis that this two-week pre-operative radiotherapy regimen is feasible, safe, and effective for the management of resectable locally advanced rectal cancer in elderly patients (≥70 years old).…”

“…Third, the dose delivered in the non-IMRT-SIB group was slightly lower than the standard dose usually delivered in preoperative CRT for rectal cancer. Meanwhile, in our previous studies to explore the effectiveness of this NCRT plan, the ypN negative rate and long-term prognosis were not inferior to those in standard radiotherapy ( 17 , 40 ). Fourth, after NCRT, five patients who underwent surgery at other hospitals were excluded because we could not determine the quality of surgery.…”

“…In two randomized trials[5], the short-course nRT is shown to be comparable with long-course chemoradiation for either local control or survival. In 2016, we reported the local control and survival data of intermediate nRT (30 Gy in 10 fractions; 30 Gy/10f) plus TME[6].…”
