Interlinking ecosystem services and Ostrom’s framework through orientation in sustainability research

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Structuring integrated social-ecological systems (SES) research remains a core challenge for achieving sustainability. Numerous concepts and frameworks exist, but there is a lack of mutual learning and orientation of knowledge between them. We focus on two approaches in particular: the ecosystem services concept and Elinor Ostrom's diagnostic SES framework. We analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each and discuss their potential for mutual learning. We use knowledge types in sustainability researc… Show more

“…In this sense, socioecological system (SES) debates should be further investigated (e.g. Ostrom 2009;McGinnis and Ostrom 2014;Ban et al 2015;Partelow and Winkler 2016) if policy or practical agendas for solving underuse problems are to be seriously considered. Second, the theme of local peculiarities should have greater recognition and be subject to more exploration.…”

“…Limited knowledge on SES complexity and the integration of such knowledge into policy practice obstruct the CT RESEX and other MPAs (Pollnac et al 2010, López-Angarita et al 2014. This relates to recognizing local traditional (Tengö et al 2014), system, target, and transformative knowledge (Partelow and Winkler 2016).…”

“…Such case studies transformed into real plans are important to bridge the gap between science and policy-making [34,35] and strengthen the impact of ecosystem services research [18,33,37]. This study shows a comprehensive stakeholder engagement process bridging the science-policy gap and including an ecosystem-based management in the implementation of planning activities [17,27,36].…”

“…The collaborative planning processes anchored the ecosystem services concept in the SES framework [30,39] with the scenarios as alternative resource systems. Both the ecosystem services and social-ecological system frameworks rely on interactions between social and ecological subsystems [27]. The scenarios were seen as alternative resource systems composed of resource units differing in spatial extent, i.e., land use elements with their provisioning, regulatory and cultural service outputs.…”
