Interleukin‐6 serum levels in patients with gynecological tumors

Abstract: Serum levels of IL-6 were evaluated in a large group of patients with benign or malignant gynecological tumors. The results obtained were correlated with the patients' clinicopathological features and follow-up data. Using a highly sensitive immunoenzymatic method for the evaluation of serum IL-6 levels, we observed that > 95% of normal healthy women exhibited values within the range of 1.9-6 pg/ml. Using a cut-off of 6 pg/ml, elevated levels of serum IL-6 were found in 53% of 45 patients with primary epitheli… Show more

“…Relations between psychosocial factors and cancer prognosis, survival, and recurrence have previously been documented, [53][54][55][56][57] and IL-6 has been linked to prognosis, survival, recurrence, and effectiveness of treatment. 10,11,15 IL-6 may, therefore, be one pathway by which psychosocial factors such as depression and social support could influence disease outcomes in ovarian cancer.…”

“…Specifically, higher levels of IL-6 have been related to larger tumors, faster tumor progression, decreased effectiveness of chemotherapy, poorer clinical disease status, relapse, and shorter survival. 10,11,15,16 IL-6 is responsive to behavioral factors including stress, depression, and social support. Increased levels of IL-6 have been documented in rats following electrical shock to the foot, restraint, and conditioned aversive stimuli stressors.…”

“…Higher serum IL6 levels has been associated with an increased tumor burden and higher volume of ascites, faster tumor progression, decreased effectiveness of chemotherapy, worse clinical disease status, increased relapse, and impaired survival in ovarian carcinoma [7,8,9,10,11]. Ovarian cancer cells produce significant levels of IL6 and express the soluble IL6 receptor (sIL-6R) [12].…”

“…We PCR-amplified the IL6 -174 polymorphism as previously described [8]. The amplicon was purified and sequenced using Big Dye terminator chemistry (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA) and an ABI 3100 DNA sequence detection system (Applied Biosystems).…”

“…Increased serum levels of IL-6, found in a large percentage of patients, correlated with tumor size and grade, and IL-6 pretreatment serum levels correlated as an independent factor with prognosis, similarly as in many solid tumors, including renal cancer, 52 colorectal cancer, 19,53 lung cancer, 54 gynecological cancers 55 and melanoma. 25 Tamm et al have shown that IL-6 may directly promote tumor cells motility and invasion.…”
