Interleukin-6 levels in serum and lung lavage fluid of children undergoing open heart surgery correlate with postoperative morbidity

Abstract: Serum and alveolar IL-6 levels increase after CPB, and correlate with postoperative morbidity. Serum IL-6 levels also correlate with mortality. They may be useful in assessing the severity of the systemic inflammatory response after CPB.

“…4 Furthermore, circulating cytokine levels have been reported to be the most sensitive indicators of postoperative morbidity, including SSI cases. [4][5][6][7] Recently, Tang et al 8 reported that SSIs at specific sites differed from each other with respect to their risk factors and that only blood transfusion was consistently associated with the risk of SSI development at any specific site. However, the mechanism by which these factors influence the clinical outcome remains unknown.…”

“…The serum level of IL-6 becomes markedly high following surgery, and it rises in response to the magnitude of surgery [2,12,15]. Moreover, IL-6 correlates not only with direct stress parameters, such as operation time and intraoperative blood loss volume [16][17][18], but also with postoperative complications and mortality [19]. It has also been reported that the serum IL-6 levels in post-hepatectomy patients with SIRS are significantly higher than those in post-hepatectomy patients without SIRS [20].…”

“…As concentrações de IL-6 respondem à CEC de modo similar, seja com o uso de oxigenador de membrana ou de bolhas. Este padrão de resposta é consistente com o papel de um mediador importante na resposta de fase aguda à CEC e parece ser o indicador mais preciso da evolução do estado do paciente (24,26) .…”
