Interleukin-6 (IL-6) production by cytokine-stimulated human Müller cells

Abstract: Our findings indicate that human Müller cells can produce IL-6 when stimulated by IL-1beta or LPS. Müller cell IL-6 production may have an important role in various conditions involving ocular inflammation

“…In the retina, IL-6 is synthesized by Müller cells and the RPE (Benson et al, 1992;Yoshida et al, 2001). A neuroprotective role for IL-6 has been suggested in different animal models of ocular injury, in vitro studies, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular oedema and experimental glaucoma (Chong et al, 2008;Funatsu et al, 2009;Noma et al, 2009) suggesting that IL-6 upregulation after injury may serve to control photoreceptor apoptosis (Chong et al, 2008).…”

“…For example, IL-1b (interleukin-1b) and TNF-a are potent inducers of IL-8 expression in Müller cells (Liu et al, 2014b), and IL1b and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) also provoke IL-6 production (Yoshida et al, 2001). IL-6 is a key cytokine in the host's defence against environmental stress, such as infection, inflammation and injury (Mesquida et al, 2014).…”

“…Müller cells produce IL-6 [202,203], e.g. upon stimulation with IL-1ß and advanced glycation end products [204,205]. Possibly, Müller cells secrete IL-6 as a factor that protects retinal ganglion cells and photoreceptors from cell death [206][207][208][209].…”
