Interleukin 6 gene polymorphisms are not associated with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage in an Italian population

Abstract: Our study did not confirm the association between functionally active polymorphisms in the IL6 gene and the risk of aneurysmal SAH in an Italian population. Additional studies in different populations are warranted to clarify the role of the IL6 gene in the pathogenesis of aneurysmal SAH.

“…The association between genetic variants of cytokines (IL-6, TNF) [111] , MMP-3 [79] and the ER alpha gene (ESR1) [112] and hemorrhagic stroke has been explored, but the findings are inconclusive [113] . In addition, there is mounting evidence [114] that an eNOS T786C SNP predicts susceptibility to post-SAH vasospasm, which is a major cause of morbidity and mortality after SAH.…”

“…The UK study comprised 91 aSAH patients (40% men, mean age 55 years) and 2720 control subjects (all men, mean age 56 years) (8). In the Italian study, analysis was performed among 179 aSAH patients (32% men, mean age 54 years) and 156 control subjects (32% men, mean age 54 years) (9). In both studies, all subjects were Caucasian.…”

“…However, race difference in the distribution frequency of IL-6 gene polymorphism, the diagnose standards of diseases, and difference in the screening standards of case control cause a fuss in this field. For example, Fontanella et al showed that IL-6 gene polymorphisms are not associated with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in an Italian population [27], which suggests race difference in the IL-6 gene polymorphisms. In addition, as a poly-gene, complex disease, IAs are greatly influenced by environmental factor, which adds difficulties to the research of molecular biology.…”
